The UN Endorses OCEANS 2021 San Diego – Porto

On 5 December 2017, the United Nations proclaimed a Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, to be held from 2021 to 2030. This Decade will provide a common framework to ensure that ocean science can fully support countries’ actions to sustainably manage the Oceans and more particularly to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The OCEANS conferences cover this decade and will be supporting the Decade of Ocean Science by providing a continuing international forum. This support begins with the OCEANS 2021 San Diego – Porto conference, which has been endorsed by the UN. The San Diego conference plenaries will highlight the Decade of Ocean Science program.

Opening the Ocean Frontier: A New Age of Discoveries
Ocean science and technology for the benefit of humankind.

Portugal is arguably a country that has witnessed one of the most expressive increase in a vast array of research and developments (R&D) in marine sciences and technologies involving not only the Portuguese R&D establishment but also most of the stakeholders targeting the multiple maritime domains: Science, Environment to Defense and Security, as well as most of the Economy of the Sea sectors such as fisheries and other forms of biomass exploration transportation, ports, extraction of minerals and other geological materials, off-shore power, tourism, and recreation. The vast Portuguese Atlantic territory, with all its resources and management responsibilities, is not foreign to the sense of urgency in developing solidly grounded strategies to address the tremendous challenges that the Portuguese society senses as vital to its future not only in Economic terms but also in terms of Identity and, related with it, its role in the World. The Portuguese oceanic historical vocation is well known. The current developments both in science and technology clearly show that there is a strong will and determination in ensuring an important role of the Atlantic Ocean in the future of Portugal. This vivid conjuncture in Portugal provides a suitable setting for hosting Oceans 2021 since it suits well the intense dynamics of ocean systems and technologies developments that have been taking place all over the world.
